Loyola Law Students' Summer Legal Experiences

Madison Torry, 3L
“My summer at Akerman, LLP was truly enjoyable. The Dallas office was open which allowed me to make connections and deeper relationships with the associates and partners in the office. I worked on several projects from discovery requests to motions for summary judgment and even saw how client relationships are fostered. Although other office locations were closed, I still connected with the other Summer Associates through virtual events like a cooking class and an escape room. It was a great experience overall and I learned several valuable skills that I look forward to putting into practice."

"I had a wonderful experience clerking in person at the Office of Attorney General Jeff Landry. Here, I was able to take a hands-on approach to learning. I worked on various memoranda, researched relevant case law, and observed depositions and hearings at the Orleans Parish Civil District Court as well as the LA 4th Circuit Court of Appeal. This was an invaluable experience that helped to shape who I want to be as an attorney."

"This past summer I was honored to work with The Amistad Law Project in Philadelphia as a part of the Movement Lawyering for Black Lives summer internship. They created a space to network with other law students and attorneys across the country who are dedicated to abolishing, imagining, and redefining how community interacts with the law. I got to work on commutation cases, court watch, and other criminal legal matters."

“Having the opportunity to intern with the Coast Guard JAGs at the 8th District was an experience that I will never forget. During my time with the Coast Guard, I was exposed to administrative law procedures, military ethics standards, regulations of SpaceX projects, and much more. I will always be grateful for the relationships that I formed and the knowledge that I obtained throughout my externship.”

“Interning with the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs over the summer was an invaluable experience. I had the opportunity to get involved in various civil rights issues, including prisoners' rights, workers' rights, and policing reform. I provided legal research and legislative research, and conducted intakes and interviews. I was able to do the work that I am passionate about, while gaining practical legal experience that I couldn't get in a classroom.”

“This summer I had the opportunity to intern with the Honorable Rachael Johnson in Orleans Civil District Court and also the Orleans Public Defenders' Office. I learned a lot about court procedure and what it's like to be both a judge and an attorney. I was able to network with other attorneys and judges from around Louisiana which was an invaluable opportunity. I am thankful that I was able to see both the civil and criminal sides of court, and I am looking forward to next summer.”

"I truly appreciated my time as a summer associate in Orlando, Florida. I received hands-on experience in almost every aspect of business: complex commercial and residential real estate issues, copyrights and trademarks, high-profile litigation management, labor and employment, healthcare, capital raising and entity formation, and corporate growth and expansion. What made the clerkship so special was the people and culture at Lowndes, and I am excited to be joining the firm in the fall of 2022."

“Not only did I enjoy my summer experience at JAC but I also felt fulfilled and more aligned with my purpose as a future attorney. I was able to gain insight on how to develop relationships with clients, how increase my professional skills in the courtroom and get insight on how the litigation side of the justice system works. I was fortunate to work with intelligent, kind hearted attorneys. Most importantly, not only did I gain insight to develop my lawyering skills, I also learned how to help improve the New Orleans community by providing resources and safe spaces for post convicted individuals.”

"This summer, I worked in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. My experiences exposed me to the multiple facets of federal practice. I had the opportunity to observe criminal hearings, civil proceedings, and the EDLA's first jury trial since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We met with the Judge in-chambers before and after each hearing which shed light on how judges approach each proceeding based on both the law and their professional experience. I also had the opportunity to work closely with the Judge on numerous settlement conferences and motions hearings. Additionally, working in federal court expanded my professional network extensively, which was a substantial advantage going into the fall OCI process."
